Mike Tanimura provided us with some stellar information about writing proposals for websites. Thanks, Mike and sorry we missed your Powerpoint slides due to technical difficulties.

On October 14, Steven Kent, Chief Technical Officer at Onshore IT Services, will present an insider's view of web hosting. He'll answer questions like how do you make a domain name point to your web server, what are DNS numbers and how do they work, what are the issues surrounding domain name security these days, why are domain name registrars selling products like "namesafe", why are some web hosts suitable for php coded sites and others not, are there ways to prepare html pages to enhance functionality on a server. Steven and his partner, Carol are the owners of our meeting venue, "Pick A Cup."

We will have a 45 minute moderated discussion to address your Dreamweaver questions following Steven's presentation. Attendees are encouraged to bring their questions and issues.

LOCATION: Pick A Cup, 1813 Dempster, Evanston. Carol, the owner, makes many delicious and healthy sandwiches and deserts, so come hungry if you want to have dinner first! They have coffee drinks and juices as well.

Meetup.com charges $19/month for their services, so be prepared to pitch in $2.00. RSVP on the meeting site and we'll see you in October! (Actually, I'll be on vacation, but Jeff McNear, our trusty assistant organizer will facilitate.)

Please call if you need directions to Pick A Cup ([masked]). Do you need a ride to Evanston? Post a request on the bulletin board. This location is a good walk from the Purple Line Dempster EL stop (about 20 minutes). Call me if you want to be shuttled over.

Enjoy the coming of fall in Chicago!

My first time meeting with this community. Do I pay the $2 at the door?

Who attended?

  • 15 attendees
    •  It was my first meetup with the group. Good people. Nice place (Pick a Cup is very cute!), lots of good information about what is what under the hood, followed by a few tips, tricks and how-tos in Dreamweaver. I'm really looking forward to future meetups with this group!
    •  The presenter was excellent and very knowledgeable. As a newbie to all things web, everything was way over my head, yet, I was able to acquire a basic overview of the whole mysterious back end server world.
    •  Steven Kent knows his stuff, and he has that gift of being able to explain complicated processes in ways that my beginner mind could grasp. Plus he was easy to talk with, and no question was too stupid for him. I really appreciated his time and expertise, and I learned a lot.
    • Lynn Doherty (+1 guest)
I was not able to attend--- but really really wanted to--- are there notes from the presentation or does anyone have some good notes from the session to share? thanks, Lynn
    •  While many of the topics in the presentation were over my head, I thought overall it was good, well delivered. Steve did answer many questions I & others had. Following the presentation, the roundtable discussion on the upcoming mentoring series was very active and helpful. Looking forward to the new year when we kick it off. The cafe was a bit louder this time around though, with another meeting being held on the other side of the cafe.
    •  This was my first visit. Though organized and the presenter was very knowledgeable of DNS, it was over my head technically. Ultimately, I came to learn more about Dreamweaver, we didnt open a computer, didnt look at Dreamweaver and after a 90 min presentation we talked about what will talk about next time we meet. So, I was disappointed and really didnt get anything out of it. I may attend the next session...not sure.
