Thanks for your attendance at the inauguration of our "mentorship series." It was well worth the effort to come out in the cold! I know this information provided some valuable insight to those I spoke to. Thanks to Dennis Deacon, we have a good start.

There is plenty of opportunity for you to continue the conversation started last night. I encourage you to respond with questions you may still have or comments. Dennis will appreciate your feedback... good, indifferent or otherwise. Here's the link:

http://dwmeetup.wordpress.com/

On February 10, we will continue our “mentorship series” with "Web Design Workflow: From Initiation to Final Design." We’ll take a look at planning a website; the goals for the website, the owning business or organization and the audience for the site. We’ll also look at competitive analysis. We’ll then look at creating personas to develop a better understanding of the site’s audience, wireframes to organize the page-level content, then creating the actual design in a graphic tool like Photoshop. Lastly, we’ll look at building, testing, then finally launching a site. At this point, there is no homework posted on the blog site, so just show up and be prepared to learn.

If you are not already subscribed to the Meetup.com discussion forum, please get yourself subscribed. The more people we have participating, the more likely it is that your questions will be answered.

See you in February at our regular location, Pick A Cup, 1813 Dempster Street, Evanston. In the meantime, stay warm!

Ten fearless and intrepid folks fought wind, snow and ice to come out for the holiday pizza party at Gullivers. Congratulations to Alex Jain who won our door prize… a month of online training at Lynda.com. (Let us know how it goes, Alex.)

On January 13, we will inaugurate our “mentorship series.” This is intended to assist those of you who are new to Dreamweaver and web development. We have put up our very own blog on Wordpress. Please read our first topic BEFORE you attend the meetup. When you come in January, be prepared to discuss your questions. Yes, that’s right, folks. This is good old-fashioned homework. Our first session is called “Foundations of Web Design,” and you can find the post here:
http://dwmeetup.wordpress.com/

I strongly encourage you to leave your comments and questions right in the blog. This will be a good resource for getting quick answers to questions that come up right away. In addition, if you are not already subscribed to the Meetup.com discussion forum, please get yourself subscribed. The more people we have participating, the more likely it is that people will have their questions answered.

Our first session in January will focus on the first topic in the mentorship series. In addition, we’d like to hear more about how you’d like to see this series fleshed out. Our plan is that our meetings in February, March, April and May will be split between the mentorship topics and a presentation of special interest. Let’s give this the old college try and see if this helps the many in our membership who come to this Meetup seeking ways to learn from the ground up. What could be easier than reading this good information right online??

Our mentorship series is not meant as a substitute for professional training. If you want a comprehensive class in Dreamweaver, please look at the many fine training organizations we have right here in the Chicago area. Ask for a recommendation!

If you are an old hand in Dreamweaver/web development, don’t skip out on these sessions. We need your input, your expertise and your dissenting opinions. Who knows… you may learn something!

My thanks to Dennis Deacon for developing the curriculum for this first session. We welcome your thoughts and questions on what has been prepared. Happy holidays, folks. See you in January back at our regular location, Pick A Cup, 1813 Dempster Street, Evanston.

Thank you goes out to Dennis Deacon for a very informative session on web analytics. If you missed Dennis' talk, you can view his slide presentation:

http://www.slideshare.net/deconspray/web-analytics-presentation

Thank you also to Dennis and Linda Ryder who are creating a schedule for our mentoring series. At this point, we expect to start in January and will devote a segment of the regularly scheduled meetup to the first segment of the mentoring series. Please watch the web site and bulletin board for further details. If you want to have a hand in the way this is presented, feel free to post your ideas on the bulletin board.

On December 9, we will have our super-duper holiday party at Gullivers, 2727 W. Howard Street, Chicago (between Albany & California Avenue). I have not been to Gullivers, but I understand it is a real experience. Besides world famous pizza, the owners seem to be trying to break the record for most cut glass light fixtures in one location. So the decor is nothing short of... well let's say interesting. Please bring your spouses, partners and significant others. Tell them they must say one thing about Dreamweaver. Our agenda is fun... with a bit of continued conversation about how our mentoring series will roll out. Let's celebrate the fact that this meetup is 2 1/2 years old!

LOCATION: Gullivers, 2727 W. Howard St., Chicago, IL.

Meetup.com charges $19/month for their services, so be prepared to pitch in $2.00. RSVP on the meeting site and we'll see you in December!

Please call if you need directions to Gullivers (773-338-2166). Do you need a ride? Post a request on the bulletin board. This location is a bus ride from the Red Line Howard Street L stop. Call me if you want to be shuttled over.

Have a great Thanksgiving holiday!

A big thank you to Steven Kent of Onshore IT Services for his presentation. I wasn't there, but the feedback sounds like folks got some good solid information. Thanks also to Jeff McNear, our assistant organizer for facilitating the evening.

On November 11, Dennis Deacon, one of our stellar members and organizer of the Chicago Web Analytics Meetup, will present on web analytics. What are web analytics you say? Here's how Dennis responds. "You’ve built a beautiful website. But how do you know if it is effective? By using web analytics, you can determine if a web site is hitting its goals and if there are problems, how to track them down. Join Dennis Deacon as he presents a primer on web analytics, the tools available, what metrics should be tracked and its other uses. After the presentation, we’ll have a round table discussion on the usage of web analytics by meetup attendees."

Attendees are encouraged to bring their questions and issues regarding any aspect of Dreamweaver and network freely with other Dreamweaver users and web professionals.

LOCATION: Pick A Cup, 1813 Dempster, Evanston. Carol, the owner, makes many delicious and healthy sandwiches and deserts, so come hungry if you want to have dinner first! They have coffee drinks and juices as well.

Meetup.com charges $19/month for their services, so be prepared to pitch in $2.00. RSVP on the meeting site and we'll see you in November!

Please call if you need directions to Pick A Cup (847-644-2389). Do you need a ride to Evanston? Post a request on the bulletin board. This location is a good walk from the Purple Line Dempster EL stop (about 20 minutes). Call me if you want to be shuttled over.

Remember to vote on November 4! (Non-partisan plug for participating in our country's future there!)

Mike Tanimura provided us with some stellar information about writing proposals for websites. Thanks, Mike and sorry we missed your Powerpoint slides due to technical difficulties.

On October 14, Steven Kent, Chief Technical Officer at Onshore IT Services, will present an insider's view of web hosting. He'll answer questions like how do you make a domain name point to your web server, what are DNS numbers and how do they work, what are the issues surrounding domain name security these days, why are domain name registrars selling products like "namesafe", why are some web hosts suitable for php coded sites and others not, are there ways to prepare html pages to enhance functionality on a server. Steven and his partner, Carol are the owners of our meeting venue, "Pick A Cup."

We will have a 45 minute moderated discussion to address your Dreamweaver questions following Steven's presentation. Attendees are encouraged to bring their questions and issues.

Keep this meetup in your calendars because we've got a great line-up coming! On July 8, Patrick Elward of Chicago Web Management will present on "Dreamweaver Productivity Enhancers-how to make Dreamweaver work better for you." Patrick is a certified Adobe Dreamweaver Expert and hosts the Chicago Webmasters Meetup.

On August 12, Linda Ryder, one of our stalwart regulars, who owns Ryder Web Design will reprise her presentation on "Best Practices and CSS." Many thanks to Dennis Deacon who uncovered the mysteries behind Adobe's Contribute. (So THAT'S how it works!) Anyone who would like a PDF of Dennis's presentation can contact me directly via e-mail. (Note... I'll be on vacation April 13-24.) Join us May 13 at 7PM as Dennis continues "Part 2" of his presentation... his latest findings regarding SEO (search engine optimization) practices. Dennis is the former Search Product Manager for JPMorgan Chase. As always, we'll have time for questions and discussion.

NOT-SO-NEW-LOCATION: Pick A Cup, 1813 Dempster, Evanston. Carol, the owner, makes a killer quiche and the desserts are to die for! They have coffee drinks and juices as well. I'm noting an issue we'll need to put up with. The conversation of other patrons was a bit distracting in our May meeting, but it's a trade off we'd best put up with for now.
